Adding programs to run on startup in Windows 8

The following method is the quickest and easiest way to configure programs or scripts to run at startup on Windows 8.

  1. Press
  2. Enter the following into the run box:
     Shell:Common Startup
  3. Drag and drop shortcuts to programs or scripts into the folder that appears.

When you next reboot (or logoff and logon again) the program or script will start automatically (although there does seem to be a slight pause of anywhere up to 30 seconds before Windows decides to process the startup items).

Note: You aren't able to create shortcuts directly into the folder - if you try, you'll get an error message asking if you'd like to create it on the desktop instead. Simply click Yes and then drag the new shortcut from the desktop into the folder.
