Using a Fujitsu ScanSnap with Windows 8 (fi-5110EOX2 or S500)

Until official Windows 8 drivers and software are released for the ScanSnap fi-5110EXO2 and S500 scanners, you can use the steps documented below as a workaround to get full scanning capabilities in both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 8 and 8.1.

Firstly, we need to download the software from Fujitsu's website.
The following links are for files needed for the fi-5110eox2:

♦ ScanSnap Manager (V3.1L12) Setup Program - ssv31l12W.exe
♦ ScanSnap Manager Update for Windows® 7 (V3.1L20) - ssv31l20up2.exe

Now install the software:

  1. Ensure that the scanner is turned off and the lid closed.
  2. Run ScanSnap Manager setup program (ssv31l12W.exe) which will extract the software to a subdirectory. Once extracted, navigate into the directory and run Setup.exe to install ScanSnap Manager.
  3. Reboot - Ignore the errors reported when windows starts.
  4. Now for the crucial step - you need to run the ScanSnap Update in Compatibility mode as follows:
    1. Right click on ssv31l20up2.exe and select "Troubleshoot Compatibility" from the context menu.
    2. Click "Troubleshoot program"
    3. Select "The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now" and click Next
    4. Select "Windows 7" and click Next
    5. Click Test the program and the installer will run.
    6. After finishing the installation, choose "Yes, save these settings for this program"
    7. Click Close

The screenshots below walk you through this in more detail

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 & 7

Finally, turn on your ScanSnap fi-5110EXO2 scanner and it will be detected correctly.

PS. Please leave a comment below If you try this installation guide for other older ScanSnap scanners and find that it is successful and I'll update the article.

I have a S1500 and have upgraded my PC which runs on Windows 8.
No idea where CD is with original software. How can I obtain new drives.
The drivers downloadable from this site 497MB with not run.

  • Brian Skinner

Robert-Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately that’s where I got the driver software that will not load.

  • Lou Davey

Tried several times but must be doing something wrong so no joy!

  • Joshua

    Beautiful! Worked exactly as stated!

Still using Windows 7 but would like to upgrade to Windows 10 when it’s available. Has anyone tried this method of updating model S500 to use with Windows 10?

    • My ScanSnap fi-5110ex02 was running perfectly under Windows 8.1, and after upgrading to Windows 10 I can confirm that it is still working perfectly.

I don’t know if upgrading Windows 7 -> 10 will be be successful for the S500 though – hopefully someone will try it and report back.

  • Mitch H

I tried and failed with my S500 with Win 10 in a VM, It could have been the VM environment, though. I’d love to hear from someone with experience (good or bad) on real hardware with win 10 and an S500.

For me, it will keep me from upgrading.

  • Sheri

Thanks – just installed my Scansnap fi-5110eox2 on Windows 8.1. The scanner works, but the Scansnap Manager does not work – I would like to use this to change settings – like what folder to store docs in, what file type to save, etc. Any suggestions???

    • Sheri, did you run the update in compatibility mode as shown and using the files linked to? I’ve re-installed windows 8.1 a couple of times and both the scanner and ScanSnap manager work fine for my fi-5110eox2.

  • Sometimes, if you’ve already tried installing the ScanSnap software and it hasn’t worked then it is advisable to take everything back to basics as follows before using the guide above.

    1. Disconnect the scanner
    2. Uninstall any Fujitsu ScanSnap software and drivers
    3. Reboot
4 Install using the guide above
    5. Reconnect the scanner

NOTE: It’s important to install the software first, before connecting / powering on the scanner.

Wow. I can’t believe this worked and am amazed you figured this out. I used REVO to uninstall everything, and followed your instructions exactly. I’m using Windows 10 PRO with the ScanSnap S500. I definitely wished I saw this post before I bought a new scanner several years ago for a windows 8 computer.

  • Daniel

This fix worked for me. I only found this site by searching after I bought vuescan http://www.hamrick.com. That scanning software worked but is very inefficient compared to Fujitsu’s..

  • Tom

Worked for me. I got hung up briefly on step 5, installer did not run as expected but I was able to get it to run.

  • The link to the software downloads no longer works. Message received:
The document you have just requested is not on this server.

    thank you very much

  • rkraig

Thank you so much. My father who passed was in the mortgage industry, he passed, but I had this S500 SnapScan which I didn’t want to purchase a new one, and now I don’t have to.. You saved me some major $$$.
